I am only giving myself ten minutes to do this, as I have to get to work! I am taking a brief break to update you all, because it has been several weeks, and I know everyone has been waiting with baited breath for me to talk about my most recent adventures.
Sadly, there have been none.
Let’s see:
My mom came to visit, FINALLY, over Memorial Day weekend. We had a nice relaxing time, and went to see MacGruber. Tom’s choice, not Mom’s, but she enjoyed it.
Kathleen came with her and has been hanging out with me and Tom for the past 2 weeks, which I have really liked. She’s going home today. We shopped, and watched hours of TV and movies, and have become addicted to the TV shows Party Down and Man v. Food. The only downside of the situation: I have been busier than ever at work, and have not gotten to spend too much time with her, save for weekends, when I sit on the couch and work, instead of sitting in my office to work. I pulled my first all-nighter since I became a full-fledged working girl attorney, and between last Sunday and Thursday (4 nights), I got a total of 8 hours of sleep. My body could not deal with that, and I have been having trouble staying awake since then. Last Friday, I closed my office door and ran in place and did push-ups and jumping jacks to try to stay awake. I don’t know if there is an office underneath me, but I hope not. I won’t complain any further about being an attorney, though. We all know it sucks and that we are overworked and under-appreciated. The hope is that there is a payoff down the road. Either through promotion, or an automatic entry to heaven, right? (I kid, I kid).
My asylum hearing was also this Monday. The client did really well, and we should have a decision before October. Fingers crossed!
Lastly, I will also share an incident demonstrating my ineptitude at work interactions and making small talk, because it is the only thing I seem to have taken the time to have written in my little daily journal of things that happen to me that I would otherwise forget:
Scene: Girl (me) walks into elevator bank on her floor. Seemingly nice, although LOUD, corporate partner that girl always hears roaming the office halls and talking to clients on his Bluetooth or calling out to his secretary stands in elevator bank, waiting for up elevator. Girl pushes down button. Partner turns to girl and smiles.
Partner: Hi, How are you?
Me: Hi.
. . . .
(Oh, crap! He asked how I was, too. He didn’t just say hi. It’s too late to say I am fine now because several seconds have already gone by and I will just look stupid. Crap, crap, he will think I am rude, what do I do? Aaaah, awkward silence, say something!)
Me: Er, I’m not too happy it’s Monday, I can say that. (WHAT?!?!?)
Partner: (Looking at girl trying to hide fact that he thinks girl is awkward and crazy) . . . . Well, it’ll be Tuesday before you know it.
Elevator opens. Thankfully, partner gets in. End Scene.
